Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone Want to Drink Together at the Press Conference… if the Pair Are Matched Up Against Each Other Next…
Is there actually a bigger potential non-title fight in MMA right now? Conor McGregor v Donald Cerrone has seized the imagination of fans. While this fight is definitely not official yet, the UFC has signalled for the first time that they are interested in putting it together, while the two men in the middle appear to have verbally agreed to fight it out.
Both of them are fan-favourites, for totally different reasons. McGregor is obviously a phenomenon. He’s the UFC’s one true global superstar and the first fighter to become a champion in two weight classes at the same time. His rise was extraordinary and seized the imagination of his loyal army of followers.
Meanwhile, ‘Cowboy’ is one of the most popular fighters on the roster. His grit, slick striking and dedication to the sport have seen him accumulate the most appearances, wins and finishes in the organization. While he’s never won a title – yet – it doesn’t matter in the eyes of fans. He just encapsulates warrior spirit. Now they’ve gone back-and-forth on social media and seem ready to party.

Friendly Rivalry?
As you can see, ‘Cowboy’ seems ready to pull out whatever stops he has to, to get the biggest payday against the highest-profile opponent of his life. If that means drinking the Irishman’s whiskey, that’s what he’ll do. He tagged ‘The Notorious’ in a message on Instagram, writing:
“Don’t worry @thenotoriousmma I’ll drink @properwhiskey at the Press Conference with ya!! Hell I’ll bring the @budweiser”
Maybe he should bring a nicer beer than Budweiser if he’s going to try and entice McGregor into a fight.

Respect
McGregor has shown a lot of respect to Cerrone over the last week. If it was literally any other fighter he’d probably come out with some scathing jibe, but the veteran hasn’t received any of the Irishman’s trademark trash talk just yet. Maybe becoming a father for the second time has caused him to mellow. Anyway, he simply commented:
“Sounds like a party!”
Happy day. Unless Georges St. Pierre comes out of retirement there probably isn’t a bigger non-title fight for McGregor right now. A rematch against Dustin Poirier is dangerous but hardly seizes the imagination of fans, while Al Iaquinta is good but doesn’t have the charismatic look of Cowboy. This is the right fight at the right time for both men.

Hearing
The near future of McGregor’s career will depend on the outcome of his hearing next Tuesday. ‘The Notorious,’ Khabib Nurmagamedov, Zubaira Tukhagov and Islam Machekev will all face investigation for their roles in the UFC 229 brawl. Jon Jones will also be there for the picogram incident at UFC 232. Sounds like the makings of a stacked card…
Let’s hope that they get off lightly so that we see all these fighters back in action soon. At the end of the day, they embarrassed themselves more than they hurt each other.
