MMA Fighter Cody Stevens Received a Horrific Injury During a Recent Fight… Now He’s Facing the Potential Loss of His Eye…
There have been some horrific injuries in MMA. That’s what happens when you step into a cage and try to literally beat up or submit another fighter by stretching their limbs and ligaments to a breaking point. When it’s broken down, it’s absolutely brutal.
However, often the worst injuries come about as a result of some utterly bizarre freak action. We’ve seen Tony Ferguson tear his LCL at a media event, Anderson Silva’s leg break and Leslie Smith’s blown up ear. They’re all bad injuries that happened in different ways.
One thing that can be controlled is eye pokes. Poor Cody Stevens is facing the loss of his right eye and retirement after taking a finger straight into his eyeball at Honor FC 6. He’s gone under surgery and has posted updates of his progress.

Horrible
We’ve seen some bad eye injuries in the past. Michael Bisping’s destroyed retina is an obvious one. However, this one is the next level. Stevens explained that unfortunately, he’s going to lose the eye. He said:
“If you haven’t been following, I ruptured my globe – which is the entirety of the eyeball – on August 19th, which was also my birthday. This injury required emergency surgical repair. From the get-go, the outlook has not been promising. Initially, they were going to remove the eye that night, as it had been ruptured so severely and lost a lot of its contents – meaning fluid inside the eye.
Miraculously the surgeons were able to suture it together, thankfully. Sutures that would hold it together, but we knew we would need a few more miracles for the eye to ever function again, even at a very low percentage. Because the globe is not healing, the eye is continuing to shrink and cause me pain. It is painful to open my left eye even. So we are now discussing removal options. Now that I have had time to process this, I know that there are other things I want to do that I cannot do if this eye is not removed.”

Onwards and Upwards?
The injury came about as a result of an eye poke to Aaron Mitchell in the 2nd round of their fight in August. During a routine striking exchange, Mitchell’s thumb entered Stevens’s eye and went straight through. This is why referees tell fighters to watch their fingers.
While his MMA career looks to be over, Stevens still hopes to continue grappling and also to enter the world of coaching full times. There are still avenues to be a successful full-time martial artist, if you look for them. Hopefully, he is able to get started.

Defiant
Stevens has been fighting professionally since 2008. He remained defiant in his darkest moment, saying that he would happily do it all over again. He’s fought 26 times in various promotions. Some of his best opposition include Shinya Aoki in ONE FC, and current UFC fighters Calvin Kattar, Jimmie Rivera, and Wilson Reis.
Best of luck to this man in the future. He’s had a tough break but looks set to battle through it.
