4. Royce Gracie vs Art Jimmerson

Again from UFC 1, Royce Gracie’s first ever bout in the UFC was against Art “One Glove” Jimmerson. No other fight in MMA’s history better illustrates how little the boxing world knew about martial arts back in 1993.

Jimmerson was 30 at the time, and already an accomplished boxer. He decided to wear a boxing glove on his left hand. His thinking was that this would allow him to jab at his opponent to keep the distance without hurting his hand. The problem is that his opponent was a grappling and submission ace. Having a glove on his left hand prevented Jimmerson from being able to hold onto his opponent and limited his grappling. Not that it would have really mattered however, Gracie was going to win that fight no matter what Jimmerson had on his hands. Jimmerson submitted at 2:18 of the 1st round.

It should be noted that Art Jimmerson is now the head boxing instructor at the UFC gym in Torrance, CA.
