Different reasons are preventing Dominick Reyes from making his UFC return, and the latest obstacle to the move is leg blood clots, the fighter revealed.
Reyes was supposed to meet Carlos Ulberg at UFC 297 on January 20, but the fight was canceled. Initially, Reyes confirmed that Ulberg backed out of the match due to an undisclosed injury, leaving him alone without an opponent. Surprisingly, this was followed by entirely different news, with Reyes being the one out of the picture and Ulberg now set to fight Alonzo Menifield at UFC Atlantic City. According to Reyes, the reversal of the situation was caused by blood clots he was lucky to spot immediately.
“God puts us through some trials, and I’m having another hard go right now,” Reyes told Middle Easy in an interview. “Me and Carlos were slated to fight January 20th. He pulled out, I don’t know why. It’s an injury, obviously, but he’s not going to say what his injury is. And then, a week later, I ended up getting blood clots. Deep vein thrombosis. So yeah, I’m out for a minute.”
While this could be considered as completely bad news, Reyes is taking the situation positively, noting how lucky he was his case didn’t end up as something even worse.
“I’m lucky to be alive right now; that’s always nice,” Reyes said. “We caught it early, so it didn’t become a pulmonary embolism, and thank God for that. Which is kind of crazy because I got a massage. My leg was hurting, and I thought I pulled a muscle in my calf, so I got a massage, and that’s the worst thing you can ever do. I’m lucky I didn’t die on that massage table right there.”
