Joe Rogan often refers to Maia as somewhat of a throwback fighter, because his gameplan is geared towards one style. Maia is an elite level grappler and jiu jitsu fighter, which is why he has been so highly ranked for such a long time.
Not surprisingly Maia racked up quite a few accolades in grappling tournaments before coming to the UFC.
Maia is a former Abu Dhabi champion, having won gold in 2007 and silver in 2005.
Maia has now won 6 fights in a row, including his recent submission win over Carlos Condit at UFC on Fox 21. He may have put himself in a good position to challenge the winner of Woodley vs. Thompson at 205.
