Georges St-Pierre vs. Conor McGregor is a fight that’s been talked about for some time now. Having returned and won the middleweight title at UFC 217, GSP and his team are now rekindling that fire…

The lines between weight classes are becoming increasingly blurred in the UFC. Just a few years ago, the idea of a fighter competing out of their weight class was a rarity, especially when considering a ‘superfight.’

Fast forward to 2017, and it’s all anyone wants to do. Current bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw is lined up for a clash with flyweight boss Demetrious Johnson. Georges St-Pierre recently battered and choked Michael Bisping for the middleweight belt, apparently just for the sake of doing it.

In 2016, Conor McGregor fought Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight belt while still holding the featherweight title. In doing so, ‘The Notorious’ really opened up the door to endless possibilities. One such possibility features GSP and McGregor, in a fight that was first publically discussed by Nate Diaz, of all people.

GSP vs. McGregor

After UFC 196, Nate Diaz made an intriguing statement. After submitting ‘The Notorious’ in epic fashion, Diaz claimed the UFC had planned on the Irishman calling out St-Pierre, who was sitting Octagon-side.

Things obviously didn’t pan out that way, and ‘Rush’ ended up being inactive for another 18 months after that fight. Now that St-Pierre is fighting again, and McGregor hopefully will be soon, the talk has again turned to this potential match-up.

St-Pierre’s coach, Firas Zahabi, insists it’s a brilliant fight, but they are well aware of McGregor’s ‘touch of death.’

Team GSP Wants The Money Fight

Quotes from The Express:

“I don’t think that’s crazy. I’ve been asking for that fight for over a year and a half now. I don’t think it’s a crazy fight. I think it’s a brilliant fight.”

“Conor McGregor is a two-belt champion, two division champ.”

“He’s got the touch of death in his hands. He knows what he’s doing, he’s highly intelligent, highly captivated, he’s extremely dangerous. And I don’t think he fears anybody.

“So I think him and Georges would be a phenomenal fight. It would probably be the biggest fight in UFC history and MMA history,” he added. “And that record wouldn’t be broken for ten years. So why not do it?”

Georges St-Pierre choked Michael Bisping out cold to win the UFC middleweight title…

Prior to UFC 217, St-Pierre insisted he was not focused on fighting in a lower weight class. Given the astronomical amounts of money this fight would generate, could GSP go back on these words?

“He’s the money fight. But I don’t challenge guys that compete in lower weight class divisions. For me, I don’t do that. I’m going up to fight Michael Bisping now. I’m looking up.”

“He’s an amazing fighter, it would be an amazing honour, but I don’t know. I don’t know what to say.

“If the fans want it and he wants it maybe it will happen but right now, I’m focused on Bisping.”
