Party

Then came the celebration. Months of embarrassment and heckling, doubting from fans and observers alike are over and done and all that’s left is to party it up Mystic Mac style. It must have been an amazing feeling for McGregor to be in the company of his fans once again. As confident as he is, there is no doubt he needed to prove to himself that he could indeed beat Diaz. The next one will be interesting.

Defeat

We all knew Nate Diaz was a tough SOB, but we still can’t help but wonder how he is so damn strong and able to withstand pretty much anything McGregor threw at him. The red mask of blood he wore for most of the fight is something he’s used to (Nate cuts very easily), which has undoubtedly fuelled the fire on more than one occasion. McGregor could have gone in there with a baseball bat and Nate would have probably still walked right through it.

Scores

A lot people are crying about a robbery, but there was no robbery here. What we saw was a very close fight that could have gone either way and it just so happened to roll McGregor’s way. Deal with it, that’s why we need another bout to complete the trilogy. Forget the Majority Decision (MD) ruling.

The judges were unanimous in giving McGregor rounds one, two and four, which would have been enough to get the Unanimous Decision. Judge Glenn Trowbridge gave Diaz a 10-8 score in round three which led to the MD. Truth of the matter is, Diaz had more output (although not by much) but McGregor landed the stronger blows and scored points for great takedown defense late in the fight.

Respect

In the end it’s all about sportsmanship. The two guys respect each other as fighters, there’s no question there. The trash-talk and all the shenanigans were just there to sell the fight, and both McGregor and Diaz are natural trash-talkers so it wasn’t hard to get them to sling some mud.

At the end of the day however, they are still true martial artists and in this sport, honor and respect still reigns above all. Glad to see the show of sportsmanship at the end there.
