Evolution
When a fighter is successful, there is a strong temptation to stick with what works rather than continue to evolve. But McGregor appears to recognize that as a potential pitfall. Even in the build-up to his latest fight with Cerrone after a long layoff, the word is that McGregor has added new tools to his belt in order to stay one step ahead of the competition.
“When he showed me different things [that’s he’s doing], I appreciated it,” UFC fighter and color commentator Dominick Cruz said earlier this week. “It was like, ‘Ok, I see where you’re going with this.’ …Make sure you tune in, because he’s got some things in store that are a little bit different – that really are different.”
Cruz would only hint that it involves things like, “plans, habits,” which certainly seems to fit in with McGregor’s long-held beliefs on what separates him from his rivals.
“My unpredictability is what separates me. If you move in so many ways, your opponent is not focused on what he’s doing. He’s focusing in on what you’re doing, and it freezes him. When they freeze and you hit, they shatter like glass.”
