Art of Fighting was released in 1993 by SNK and has always been associated with one of the first fighting games that included super moves. The game also introduced the meter bars that show up above the components head to see how much health one has left. Can’t imagine a game without meters anymore nowadays.
7. Tekken 3
Not the first 3D game on the market but definitely a game-changer. It was the first fighting game where a player could sidestep out of his 2D environment. Remember the amazement when this game was released? Revolutionary 3D combos and blocking techniques!
6. Marvel VS Capcom 2
Not the first crossover multicharacter fighting game ever (that honor goes to our nr 10. X-men VS Streetfighter 2), but man, what an enormous collection of heroes, villains, and other famous fighters!
You could even form teams of three characters to compete against each other.
5. Super Smash Bros
In 1999 Nintendo released a fighting game wherein their favorite characters stepped in the ring for a good old fashion brawl. Link, Super Mario, Kirby, and all other Nintendo hotshots throwing punches and competing for the title. The game didn’t include a health meter so the only way of winning, was to knock each other out of bounds. Lots of fun!
4. Virtua Fighter
Sega released Virtua Fighter in 1993 was the first 3D fighting game ever. Yes, that’s right, even before Tekken was released.
It revolutionized fighting games and gave gamers a tough choice; play 2D fighting games or switch over to the 3D genre? The game also inspired the future game DOA (Dead or Alive), and also proved to be a great success, being a 3D fighting game.
3. Mortal Combat
In 1992 the most brutal and shocking fighting game was released; Mortal Combat. A name is well known among gamers and…well, everyone who hasn’t been living under a rock for the last decades. Mortal Combat was also the first game that introduced live pictures as fighting characters, giving the game a “live combat” feeling.
The game also gained popularity because of its “Fatality” finishing moves. These proved to be true eye candy for gore and violent fighting game fans.
2. Streetfighter
Ryu and Ken started throwing punches in 1987 and haven’t stopped to take a break. The game started a true revolution with its Hakoukens circular motion and changing backgrounds.
Street Fighter also showed in cinemas but unfortunately for them, it didn’t become half as successful as the game. Sure, Streetfighter might not look as flashy as Guilty Gear XX, isn’t as violent as Mortal Combat, and lacks the fun of Super Smash Bros, but we placed the game on number 2 because it’s the grandfather of fighting games, and thanks to Streetfighter, we can enjoy all of the spinoffs until today.
1. Streetfighter 2
And then at our number one, released in 1991 by Capcom, this fighting game sold over 14 million copies worldwide and that is besides arcade machines.
Streetfighter 2 laid the foundation of most fighting games we now know today. It was the first game in where the player could enter a “story mode” in where he or she could compete against computer-controlled enemies until you ended up fighting the big boss. After kicking some serious AI butts, your friend could pick up the second controller and you could have good one-on-one fighting it out with your buddy. Each available player had totally different fighting styles and techniques and their characters were so different that everyone had his or her favorite to play with.
Also, besides kicks and punches, you could overwhelm your opponent with throws and pound them to the ground with high-speed moves that were never seen before in those days.

The popularity of fighting games never seems to slow down or fade away. Almost every month developers release new and revolutionary fighting games on game consoles, PCs, slot games, and many other platforms.
