5. Georges St. Pierre vs. Matt Hughes UFC 79
This fight was for the interim welterweight championship, as the current champion, Matt Serra was out with injury.
The bout took place 8 months after Matt Serra’s history-making upset of St. Pierre at UFC 69. Serra had won the third season of the Ultimate Fighter, earning him a title shot against Georges. His round 1 TKO had been considered the greatest upset in UFC history, until Holly Holm upset Ronda Rousey last year.
Even though GSP and Matt Hughes were the consensus top two guys in the division at the time, everyone knew that GSP had to avenge his loss to Serra before he could truly be champion again. Even Georges realized this, which is why he threw the interim belt down moments after winning it.
