1. Kimbo Slice
Earlier this year we lost Kimbo Slice. His death at 42 years old from heart failure rocked many in the MMA community. While critics argue that Kimbo was never a very good fighter, and whose popularity was exploited in EliteXC, almost all who knew him said that Kimbo was a very humble and nice guy. It seems nobody had a bad word to say about him.
Kimbo Slice’s popularity grew via videos of his underground street fights. The videos of him knocking out opponents went viral on YouTube, but it was actually his first loss that earned the most notoriety online. When Slice lost to police officer/MMA fighter Sean Gannon, there was a groundswell of support online for both to get into legit MMA fighting.
In 2008, Kimbo attempted to transition from street fighter to legit mixed martial artist. While Kimbo did have some early success in EliteXC, he was exposed as a fighter with a limited skill-set against higher-level competition.
