Boxing legend Chris Eubank was one of the most dangerous and dominant middleweight boxers of his era. The British star known as ‘Simply The Best’ held victories over six world champions during his career and was the WBO middleweight and super middleweight champion.
Rivalries with Nigel Benn and Steve Collins saw Eubank become one of the most popular British boxers of all time. Now long retired, Eubank coaches his son Chris Eubank Jr, who took part in a tragic boxing match last night.
Eubank Jr took on Nick Blackwell for the British middleweight title, and it was a brutal affair. After 8 rounds of slinging leather, it was clear that the tough headed Blackwell wasn’t going to get knocked out.
Then, in between rounds, Chris Eubank Sr gave a chilling speech to his son. He told him that if the referee didn’t stop the fight, then Blackwell would be getting hurt, and urged his son to aim for the body rather than the head, which could worsen his opponent’s condition.

Chris Eubank is the voice of experience, but the fight still ended in tragedy, much like his own bout with Michael Watson in 1992. Blackwell collapsed in the ring, and was placed in a medically induced coma when taken to the hospital.
The referee mercifully stopped the fight in round 10, but it was far too late. The damage had already been done through the middle rounds, and Blackwell collapsed in the ring. They were frightening scenes to say the least.
As per the report from The Mirror:
British Boxing Board of Control general secretary Robert Smith said on Sunday: “I spoke to one of the doctors this morning and he said there is a bleeding of the brain.
“He’s in intensive care, he’s in an induced coma and he is resting and being looked after by the experts.”
The story is eerily similar to Eubank Sr’s experience with Watson in 1992, which ended with Eubank’s opponent suffering long term brain damage and physical difficulties. Thankfully he was able to influence his son’s fight enough that it didn’t end up even worse this time.
