It’s not the first time we’ve seen this happen. Perhaps this time the American prospect brought the negative attention on himself, you be the judge…
UFC Fight Night 119 went down in Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil last night. Headlining the card was former light-heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida vs. heavy hitter Derek Brunson at 185 pounds.
Having been inactive due to a two-year USADA suspension, ‘The Dragon’ was hoping to hit the ground running. He certainly hit the ground, courtesy of a monster left hook delivered by Brunson in the first round. Watch the highlights of that brutal KO here.
Further down the card, a former middleweight and welterweight title contender, Demian Maia was looking to get back in the win column. Standing between the Brazilian and his rebound victory was Colby Covington, a dominant wrestler with just one loss out of now 14 fights.
In front of his home crowd in Brazil, Maia was manhandled.
Another Changing of The Guard
After battering Maia, Covington took some time to insult the entire Brazilian nation. Slamming the local crowd as ‘filthy animals,’ Covington’s words would later land him in hot water with UFC execs.
Also calling out Tyron Woodley, Covington’s victory speech was drowned out by jeers and boos from the crowd. First of all, let’s check out the post-fight interview itself. Covington had just scored a dominant unanimous decision win over Maia:
Before the top brass got word, though, the Brazilian crowd had their way with Covington. Escorted from the arena by the security team, Covington had food, bottles and various other objects thrown at him
Surprisingly, Covington was not remorseful about his words. During the post-fight presser, ‘CC’ said he was justified in his statement.
Anyway, watch the video of the Brazilian crowd attacking Covington, and check out the full event results below:
