The hype train is still very real. Chechnya’s Khamzat Chimaev is one of the most exciting UFC fighters on the roster today. After back-to-back domination in his first two fights, Chimaev returned against Gerald Meerschaert in what was supposed to be a step-up in competition.
Meerschaert had a chip on his shoulder because the UFC had already booked Chimaev’s next opponent. The Swedish-based Russian national was set to fight UFC legend Damian Maia if he could get past the American. Obviously, Meerschaert felt disrespected and wanted to make a statement.
However, it ended in the worst possible way for Meerschaert. Chimaev strode across the octagon and knocked him out with one punch. It was an epic finish and shows just how dangerous this fighter is. He’s like a dark version of Khabib but with one-punch KO power. In sum it was a frightening but epic knockout. Check out the full fight below.

Chaos
Elswhere on the night in the UFC Apex, Johnny Walker got back on his hype train. The Brazilian was riding two losses in a row coming into this contest against the dangerous Ryan Spann. Walker responded to this by moving to SBG Ireland to train with John Kavanagh in Dublin.
This fight was chaos from start to finish. First of all, Spann rocked Walker early in the first round and it looked like he would finish the Brazilian. However, Walker recovered and responded by knocking his opponent out. Spann shot in for a takedown but Walker successfully defended and went to town with elbows and hammerfists for a violent finish.

Dumb Move
Meanwhile, Rando Markos made one of the dumbest moves in UFC history by going to the ground with Mackenzie Dern. The former Brazilian Jiu Jitsu threw a kick and slipped. Markos responded by taking top position. This was a massive mistake because she entered Dern’s world.
Immediately, Dern hunted for the triangle but Markos managed to avoid it. Then she looked for an omaplata but Markos escaped again. However, the American has a big bag of submission tricks and finally locked in an armbar. Markos had no choice but to tap because she wasn’t going anywhere. Dern moves to 4-1 in the UFC.

Main Event
In the main event, Colb Covington totally dominated Tyron Woodley to get back on track. Covington lost his last fight –Â a title clash – to Kamaru Usman. Meanwhile, Woodley suffered back-to-back losses to Usman and Gilbert Burns before this. It had huge ramifications for both men but in the end ‘Chaos’ was too much for Woodley.
Once again, Woodley was gunshy. He was almost afraid to move forward and blitz Covington. Instead, he threw that same overhand right and didn’t get close. Meanwhile, Covington poured on the offense. He typically had an incredibly high output and eventually won by TKO. Covington was in top position when Woodley somehow got a rib injury and was unable to continue.
After the fight, Covington racially abused Kamaru Usman so yeah, that rematch will probably happen.
