Angela Hill found herself on the wrong side of a split-decision again, but this time against Michelle Waterson. After making history as the first black woman to headline a UFC card, ‘Overkill’ wanted the win. She was on an exciting tear before a controversial split-decision loss to Claudia Gadhelha.

Meanwhile, Waterson had lost back-to-back fights against Carla Esparza and Joanna Jedrzejczyk. As two of the most recognizable women on the roster, neither of their careers were in danger. But it had major implications for their futures and the potential of big fights.

The result was controversial on social media. However, the reality is that it could have gone either way. One judge bizarrely scored the fight 49-46 to Waterson though which was totally ridiculous. 48-47, either way, was reasonable, depending on your perspective.

Great Start

Hill started this fight very well. She showed her rapid progress at this level with crisp striking. Waterson tried to make the fight ugly with clinch work and attempted takedowns. However, Hill had a clear advantage with her hands in the first couple of rounds.

This was an exciting fight. Hill poured on the aggression. Her continued overhand rights found their mark and Waterson’s head began to swell. ‘The Karate Hottie’ put together some blitzes but Hill still dominated. Hill wobbled her opponent with a big right hand as she got up from the ground.

Comeback

The Karate Hottie finally got a takedown in round three. She didn’t do much on top but Hill didn’t do much from the bottom either. Finally, Waterson tried to mount her opponent and switched to top control. Hill landed an illegal upkick at the end of the round. Waterson had snatched a round back.

Waterson knew that she needed to do something quickly or this fight would slip away from her. She was way more aggressive, throwing kicks and punches as Hill started to slow down. This allowed ‘The Karate Hottie’ to establish her distance and tee off on Hill. Before, Hill’s movement allowed her to keep Waterson at range, but that was over.

It was all down to the fifth and final round of this enthralling contest. It went back-and-forth with both women having their moments. Waterson faked a takedown and landed a crisp hook. She also went to town on Hill’s legs. Meanwhile, Hill’s knees and elbows in the clinch at the end were strong. But the end result saw Waterson take home the win.

Big Win

This was an exciting fight and one that both women can be proud of. A lot of MMA fans said that Hill was robbed but this is way too strong a statement. Yes, depending on how you scored the fight, she could have done enough to win. But she did slow down visibly and Waterson’s momentum carried her over the line. Furthermore, the latter’s takedowns and variety definitely worked in her favor.

A clash with Marina Rodriguez would make sense next for Waterson froma rankings perspective. Meanwhile, Hill is desperate for a rematch with Claudia Gadhela but her loss tonight will have put a severe dent in that hope.
