Was This the Most Cursed Week of MMA Main Events Ever? Cage Warriors Fighter Sofiane Boukichou Shattered His Leg in a Heavyweight Clash in England on Saturday Night… Watch the Agonizing Footage Below…

What a strange weekend of MMA we had. We were spoilt for choice with events to choose from, with the first ever UFC on ESPN card going down in Phoenix. There were two Bellator cards on Friday and Saturday in Connecticut. Meanwhile, ONE Championship and Cage Warriors also had fights over the weekend.

Bizarrely, the majority of the main events ended in ways that left a bitter taste in the mouths of fans. We saw Cain Velasquez get clipped and have his knee blown out in 26 seconds. Matt Mitrione kicked Sergei Kharitonov in the family jewels to end their match in 14. Meanwhile, Paul Daley and Michael ‘Venom’ Page disappointed the world by fighting a blue belt jiu-jitsu match.

Perhaps the most shocking moment from the weekend’s action went down in Liverpool, England, when Sofiane Boukichou broke his leg in a heavyweight main event. Watch the footage below, courtesy of Cage Warriors.

This is a very nasty injury and you can only hope that Sofiane Boukichou makes a smooth recovery. He came into his main event against Tom Aspinall on a five-fight winning streak. The leg-break occurred in the first and only round of the fight after he threw a low leg kick, that reverberated off of Aspinall’s shin and snapping his bone like a branch.

The commentator called it straight away as Boukichou dropped to the canvas in obvious agony. It was very reminiscent of Chris Weidman’s second win over Anderson Silva when the Brazilian infamously broke his leg against the New Yorker. That’s one of the most gruesome injuries ever to go down in MMA.

Another serious leg injury happened in the main event of UFC Phoenix on Sunday night. After Francis Ngannou clipped Cain Velasquez with a ghost uppercut, the former two-time UFC heavyweight champion’s knees buckled, with early signs suggesting that he tore his MCL. This comes after a layoff that lasted for more than three years. A bitter Velasquez told reporters:

“I just can’t believe that happened. Having a great camp coming in, truly, everything I said, how strongly I felt, that was all true. Coming in I felt great out there, relaxed, and then taking that one step I did with my left foot. I just felt something pop and then when I tried to take another step it just gave out on me. My knee gave out on me, I can’t even believe that happened.

“Going in 100 percent healthy. 100 percent ready and just to have this freak accident, I can’t even believe it. It’s just hard. That’s sports, that’s what we do. That’s what happens sometimes. It’s just really frustrating because the fire in me is strong, stronger than ever. In camp, great camp, great camp. And then this happens.”

Freak Injuries

While Ngannou definitely connected with Velasquez’s chin, his body also let him down. While MMA is an unforgiving sport, it’s often the case that injuries happen in a bizarre manner rather than as a result of being punched or kicked. You’re actually more likely to break a bone by throwing a strike like a spinning back fist or elbow than you are from somebody attacking you.

We’ve seen that happen to the likes of Paige VanZant and Paul Felder in recent years, while Georges St. Pierre’s battle with ulcerative colitis may have ended his career. It’s a funny old game…
