UFC veteran Rousimar Palhares has quite the reputation in the MMA world. Renowned for his high level ground game, ‘Toquinho’ loves to grab a leg and crank until his opponents submit. The problem during his UFC career is that Palhares had problems letting go.
‘Paul Harris’ became notorious for holding the submissions far too long. Unlike the Brazilian jiu jitsu specialist, the UFC had no problem in releasing their hold on him. After injuring Mike Pierce and also a previously failed drug test, the UFC said goodbye to Palhares.
Success in WSOF
Joining the World Series of Fighting, Palhares found success very quickly after his UFC career ended. In his first fight for WSOF, ‘Toquinho’ defeated Steve Carl to win the promotion’s welterweight title.
Palhares would then defeat fellow UFC veteran Jon Fitch by kneebar submission. Two fights deep in to his WSOF career and it seemed the bad times were now behind ‘Paul Harris.’ Not so fast guys. His next fight was a highly controversial and gruesome display.
Controversy against Jake Shields
Facing Jake Shields, another UFC veteran, at WSOF 22, Palhares was up to his old tricks again. This time around the Brazilian grappler used dirty eye gouges throughout the fight. The fight ending submission was once again held far too long.
This time the athletic commission had seen enough. The NSAC banned Palhares for two years, and he was stripped of the title and also fired from WSOF. Palhares was now forced to fight overseas.
Accusations Against Meek
Following the ban from fighting on US shores, Palhares made a trip to Italy. Facing the massive underdog Emil Weber Meek at Venator FC 3, ‘Toquinho’ got absolutely knocked silly. Strangely enough, the Brazilian tried accusing Weber Meek of dirty punches to the back of the head. Oh the irony.
Last night Palhares fought in Poland against another unknown opponent, and it ended very badly for the controversial BJJ ace…
