This would be a great fight…

Having been inactive for nearly two years, Nick Diaz is perhaps more needed by the UFC now than ever before. During a time when the promotion is running seriously low on star power, Nick Diaz is among a select few fighters who can move the needle.

Although his suspension and fine with the NSAC are finally settled, talks with Diaz have reportedly not gone well. Much like his younger brother Nate, Nick is apparently not interested in small potato fights.

Dana’s Claims & Wonderboy

Nate Diaz recently erupted over claims made by Dana White. The UFC president had said both Diaz brothers were turning down multiple fights, to which Nate responded with this furious Tweet.

Regarding Nick Diaz, a potential needle mover in Stephen Thompson is an option. Speaking with MMA Latest News, Wonderboy’s Dad Ray Thompson says Nick would be a fight they want next:

Thompson vs. Diaz?

‘We are not ones for calling people out, but in terms of people who I would like Stephen to fight next,” Thompson said. “Preferably someone in the top five. Maybe Condit. He’s def a stud and will come to fight. Lawler is a beast and will fight no matter what.

“I think the best fight would be between Wonderboy and Nick Diaz. Nick ain’t scared and will def bring hell in a hand basket. We’ve got a lot of respect for these men and would be honored to step in the Octagon with either of them.”

According to Wonderboy himself, there’s more options out there:

Lawler, Condit…

As per Fansided.com, Thompson would entertain former champion Robbie Lawler or ex-interim boss Carlos Condit:

“I’m looking to fight a top-ranked guy or two,” Thompson said. “I know there’s a lot of talk about Gunnar Nelson. He’s ranked number nine, I’m looking at one through five fight now. I know Demian Maia has a fight coming up with Masivdal.

Hopefully (Carlos) Condit, you hear word about him retiring. I’ve always wanted to step out with him, or even Robbie Lawler. I think Gunnar Nelson fights one of those top guys, proves himself that he’s able to go up there. I think in the future we’ll be facing each other but right now it’s those top five guys that I’m looking at.”

Momentum

Although his last two fights have been for the title against Tyron Woodley, Wonderboy’s previously hot streak has been dampened for now. With potential bouts against Diaz, Lawler or Condit next, will Thompson kick his way back to title contention?
