Genki Sudo
Genki Sudo was one of Japan’s most popular fighters and indeed one the sport’s most memorable characters too, known for his flamboyant, choreographed, theatrical entrances in many of his native countries biggest promotions.
He was a talented fighter too and compiled a 16-4-1 record, defeating the likes of Nate Marquardt, Mike Brown, Ramon Dekkers and Royler Gracie along the way.
Then at the age of 28, Sudo shocked fans by announcing his retirement with immediate effect.
Afterwards he cited a number of reasons, including a recurring neck injury, though he also stated that he also wanted “more time for travel and leisure.”
He’d go on to form a popular band in Japan called ‘New Order,’ which blended his love for music and dance.
It’s quite possible that Sudo was wise to get out of the sport with his health still relatively intact, though you can’t help but wonder what might have been if he had continued to fight through the prime years of his career.
