Gilbert Yvel
Gilbert Yvel cemented his reputation as one of the sport’s bad boys in 2004 when he attacked the referee during his fight with Atte Backman at Fight Festival 12 in Finland.
Early in the first round the two fighters had become tangled up in the ropes while in the clinch, which resulted in the referee trying to reset their postion away from the ropes.
However, Yvel refused to cooperate and continually swatted the referee’s hand aside and ignored him as he tried in vain to get the fight started again.
Yvel’s temper eventually reached boiling point and he uncorked a brutal left hook to the jaw that floored the offical, before also kicking him while he was down.
The still-dazed referee then attempted to stand, only to stagger across the ring and fall back down again.
Yvel was subsequently disqualified from the fight and in years to come would have difficulty getting a license to fight in the state of Nevada due to his poor conduct.
