Jon Jones
He may be better known these days for getting into trouble with the police, but during his rise to stardom in the UFC, Jon Jones actually hit the headlines for stopping a crime in progress.
On the morning of his first ever title fight against Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua back in 2011, Jones and his coaches Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn headed to a park in New Jersey to find some peace and relaxation, but found anything but.
Instead, as the arrived at the park they witnessed a man smashing an old lady’s car window and stealing her GSP system, then running off down the street.
Jones’ two coaches immediately set off in pursuit of the suspect, and he soon followed and used his speed to overtake them and catch up with the robber before kicking out his legs to take him down.
However, it was then Jackson who then took over, keeping the man pinned down until the police arrived to arrest him.
There were concerns later that the high drama before his title opportunity may have distracted Jones from the task at hand, but that proved not to be the case, with ‘Bones’ claiming a third round TKO stoppage to become the UFC’s new light-heavyweight champion.
