Frank Mir
Perhaps it’s no surprise that UFC legend Mir jumped on the trend of fighters trying their hand at comedy, as he’s always shown a willingness to supplement his income by whatever means necessary. Case in point, even while he was already a big-name star in the UFC, Mir retained his day-job as a Director of Security at the Spearmint Rhino strip club in Las Vegas.
Following the blueprint laid out by Brendan Schaub, Mir started his own podcast ‘Phonebooth Fighting’ with comedian and MMA commentator Richard Hunter. He was thes encouraged by his co-host to try stand-up comedy for himself. Hunter helped Mir cut down 70 minutes of material he’d come up with to less than 10 minutes and then landed Mir his first gig in 2017 at Stratosphere’s comedy club in Las Vegas.
At first, Mir was playing to a ‘friendly’ audience consisting mostly of fans of the podcast or opening for Hunter’s show. But then branched out to also perform in front of ‘cold’ crowds who had no idea who he was. In the two years that have followed Mir has continued to do stand-up comedy gigs. It’s just one string to his bow as he’s still fighting, doing color commentary, podcasting and public speaking engagements, among other things.
