One of the UFC’s most notorious wild-child’s, Chris Leben retired from the UFC in late 2013 and within a few months he appeared to be in a bad place and revealed on social media that he was essentially flat-broke.
“I wish I would’ve drove truck last 10yrs, then at least is have insurance to see a counselor,” Leben stated on Twitter. “UFC left me broken with nothing.”
Leben later deleted the message and apologized for his outburst, while thanking the UFC and Dana White for reaching out to make sure he was ok.
It’s worth noting that over the course of his eight-and-a-half-year UFC run, Leben had earned $975,000 in disclosed income, and in a subsequent interview some time later, ‘The Crippler’ admitted that it was his lifestyle that had led to his financial difficulties.
“The bottom line is, especially with all the illegal drugs, I was spending all the money I was making anyways,” Leben candidly confessed to Frank Trigg.
Leben has attempted to turn his life around in the years since, becoming sober, focusing on teaching MMA and even returning to fighting via bareknuckle boxing.
