Saul Alvarez is the biggest draw in boxing right now. Even if you don’t think he’s the pound-for-pound king, the four-division champion is a huge name. He’s looking for his next challenge after winning the WBO light-heavyweight championship. ‘Canelo’ is a true superstar.
When you’re as high-profile as the Mexican, then a target appears on your back. Several boxers have their eye on him, but so have some MMA fighters. The likes of Jorge Masvidal and Tyron Woodley have both made it clear that they’d love to fight the champion.
However, up until now, Alvarez has shown no interest in a crossover fight featuring an MMA fighter. But in a recent interview with TMZ, he changed his tune. Now he knows who Masvidal is and is interested in fighting him.
Masvidal had an outstanding 2019, winning the inaugural BMF title. He has genuine knockout power and is one of the biggest stars in the UFC right now. This has piqued ‘Canelo’s’ interest. All of a sudden, he’s not dismissing a clash with ‘Gamebred.’ Would you like to see this fight?
“MMA fighter? For business, why not?” Alvarez said when asked by TMZ about Masvidal. “We’ll see.”
Realistically it probably won’t happen unless Masvidal’s profile explodes even more. He’s not at Conor McGregor’s level of fame before he took on Floyd Mayweather.
Masvidal believes he will beat Alvarez. He’s one of the most confident athletes on the UFC roster today. The Miami resident has sublime striking, but would he be able to hang with a bonafide elite boxer? We’ll believe it when we see it.
“If Canelo wants to get his ass kicked, that’s a fight I’ll take,’ Masvidal said after UFC 244. ‘I can box. I can hit hard. I’ve got different angles. I’m not going to get tired in a 12 round boxing event, especially if I have time to prepare for it. It’s just kind of fate. He’s fighting today, I’m fighting today. I heard we f*****g killed him on the pay-per-views. ‘I don’t know I’d like to break his face. Just fight, just test myself, make a lot of money for testing myself. But I truly feel I could make it 1-1 MMA versus boxing.”
Canelo is also open to a rematch with Floyd Mayweather. Well, of course, because there isn’t a bigger earner out there for him. However, the problem is that ‘Money’ is a hundred years old now. Nobody would take the win seriously when Alvarez beats him. Unfortunately for the Mexican, he’s never going to be able to get that loss on his record back.
“It’s a fight that I would definitely like, and it’s a different time now,” said Canelo. “I was very young and experienced at the time and now I’m a different fighter. It will be a totally different result, but it’s a fight that I don’t think will happen.”
Thankfully not. There is still talk of a Mayweather v Pacquiao 2 fight, but does anybody really want to watch that again? Boxing is strange when it gets to this point.
