Ciryl Gane is currently the UFC interim heavyweight champion, and his next fight will likely be against Francis Ngannou for the title unification. Gane has a big frame, but the way he moves inside the Octagon is like a middleweight.

Gane’s style of Fighting

Gane may have only a few fights in his MMA, but he has already beaten the best heavyweights on the planet. Not only that, most of his battles looked too one-sided. Another significant aspect of why Gane is great is that he is more technical than other heavyweights. Usually, it only takes one punch to end the fight in the heavyweights, but for Gane, he could win on points, knockout, and even submission.

Before his UFC run, Gane was already an accomplished kickboxer; he also finished with a 13-0 undefeated record. It just shows that Gane has yet to face significant adversity in the ring, the way he moves and floats is hard for bigger guys since they will carry their weight for all rounds, but for Gane, he seems to pull it off.

Early MMA Start

He started his MMA career in August of 2018 against Bobby Sullivan. His first fight was for the vacant TKO Heavyweight belt, and he won via submission. He went on to defend two more times before entering the UFC.

UFC Debut

The problem with UFC heavyweight is that they lacked many talents compared to the other divisions, and Gane was running through them efficiently. For Gane’s next fight, he faced Don’Tale Mayes and dominated most of the battle. Mayes was too durable to be stopped via TKO, but Gane slipped in a heel hook at the last seconds of the fight.

Gane vs. Dos Santos

He then went on to beat Tanner Boser via unanimous decision. His first big test was against former UFC heavyweight champion, Junior Dos Santos. It was also an opponent that many fans are aware of. Gane stayed outside and landed great shots until he landed an elbow in the clinch that knocked JDS down. It led to a finish in the second round.

Gane vs. Rozenstruick: Kickboxers clash

A technical heavyweight was his next foe, Jairzinho Rozenstruik, who was also an accomplished kickboxer. Many were saying that JDS was out of his prime, and facing Rozenstruik could gauge where Gane is at.

In the fight, it was a bit lackluster, but Gane won the contest decisively. Both counter-strikers not willing to give up their defense led to a boring fight to some fans. Dana White was not impressed with Gane’s performance since it did not thoroughly entertain the fans.

For his next fight, he faced Alexander Volkov, who was a much taller fighter than he was. Volkov was also a great striker as well and utilized his range really well. Gane dominated Volkov most of the fight; he was just too fast and too skilled for Volkov.

Interim title fight vs. Derrick Lewis

An interim title fight was booked for Lewis vs. Gane; many did not like the idea to book it as an interim fight since Ngannou just won the belt recently and was ready to fight a month later. It was supposedly Ngannou defending his belt against Derrick Lewis.

It was a great opportunity for Gane to fight for the title in just his 10th MMA fight; he was also the favorite to win the fight. Many are aware that Lewis would not outstrike his Gane and his only path is to land the knockout punch as he usually does.

Gane was just too skilled and landed leg kicks to slow down Lewis. He was picking apart Lewis most of the fight until he landed the combos that stunned Lewis. It eventually led to a finish with Gane becoming the interim champion and will fight for the unification against Ngannou.

It will be a great fight, and both used to spar before as they had the same coaches. It is pretty much even in terms of betting odds, and this is also the first time Gane is not a heavy favorite to win the fight.
