And just like that, the Nate Diaz trilogy fight goes out the window. But, we can now look forward to a legitimate unified title fight and McGregor’s first title defense…

Last night the finishes were on display during a monster pay-per-view event. Taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada, UFC 216 was a massive event in many ways, with the main ramifications coming in the lightweight division.

With talks of the champ Conor McGregor fighting Nate Diaz, maybe even Georges St-Pierre, Kevin Lee and Tony Ferguson had heaps of pressure on them. Eventually, it was Ferguson who would shine in Vegas.

Winning the interim belt with a third-round submission, ‘El Cucuy’ extended his record unbeaten streak to 10. Nobody in the history of the 155-pound division has done close to that number.

Immediately after the fight Ferguson got on the microphone and challenged McGregor. Below you’ll see Dana White’s comments confirming this fight will happen next.

Dana White Confirms McGregor vs. Ferguson

During the aftermath of UFC 216, Dana White spoke with FOX Sports to confirm a title unification bout. Normally this would be a no-brainer, but given the fact McGregor is the champion anything could happen.

“Nobody is talking about Diaz,” White said. “Diaz has never been talked about, that’s internet bullsh*t. Tony is the interim champion, Conor is the champion, it’s the fight that makes sense. It’s the fight that has to happen, it doesn’t make sense, it’s the fight that has to happen.”

“We didn’t specifically talk about it, but we did talk about it kind of. He wants to fight again this year. He does want to fight again this year, so – he went and partied for a while, and I went home for a while – you got to let him blow off some steam and then figure it out.”

“Tony is a busy guy man,” White said. “He keeps coming forward, he keeps throwing all kinds of different things at you, and Conor’s awesome. There’s no way it’s not a great fight. Impossible.”

Ferguson was not shy in his comments about McGregor post-fight at UFC 216. ‘El Cucuy’ urged ‘The Notorious’ to fight him, or simply vacate the title:

“Where you at, McNuggets, you fuckin’ piece of shit? I’m gonna kick your ass. You better fuckin’ come and defend that belt. Defend or vacate, motherfucker!”
