Conor McGregor Finally Releases Statement on UFC 223 Situation and it is Crude…

April 7th was meant to be the day that Conor McGregor was finally stripped of his UFC lightweight title. The Irishman hasn’t fought in the Octagon since November 2016, when he took the belt from Eddie Alvarez. In doing so, he became the first man to hold two titles at the same time, as he was also the featherweight champion.

Tony Ferguson was meant to take on Khabib Nurmagamedov for the belt in the main event of UFC 223. However, the fight has been called off after Ferguson tore his LCL. It’s a ludicrous situation because this is the fourth time the fight has been booked. To rub salt into his wounds, Max Holloway will replace him against the unbeaten Nurmagamedov.

This means Ferguson has effectively been stripped of his interim lightweight title. To make things even more interesting, Holloway has the opportunity to emulate McGregor and hold two belts at the same time. Needless to say, the MMA world has been waiting to hear McGregor’s take on this crazy situation.

McGregor Baiting

Team Khabib has already done its best to drag McGregor out of bed and sign on the dotted line for the main event. It’s not going to happen though, because the fight is in 6 days, and it is just too short a time for ‘the Notorious’ to make the cut. However, it didn’t stop Khabib from tweeting:

“Where are you now? @TheNotoriousMMA”

The Russian’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, also took to social media to criticize McGregor’s media silence, recalling how the Irishman was vocal about his attempts to save UFC 222 and replace Max Holloway against Frankie Edgar. McGregor wasn’t biting the bait.

Nothing Doing

UFC President Dana White confirmed that McGregor was not going to get involved. He spoke to ESPN about the importance of correctly marketing him. Let’s face it: He’s the UFC’s biggest cash cow. White shamelessly told the media:

“Conor is not the guy I want to throw in as a late replacement fighter. He’s a guy I want to make a fight with and have the right amount of time to promote the fight. I think Conor could return in September, and it could be against one of these guys.”

Very Interesting

Ferguson’s misfortune could actually make things much more interesting for the UFC. If Khabib wins, the UFC could finally go to Russia, which would be absolutely sensational. McGregor finally broke his silence about this crazy scenario. He released a statement on Twitter and it was short and sweet:

“These fools pull out more times than I do with my dick.”

He is expected to appear at the event, simply because his training partner Artem Lobov is on the card. It’s highly likely that the winner of the lightweight championship will be his next opponent. McGregor knows he has the drawing power and that the real prize isn’t the belt. It’s the chance for a ‘red panty night’ against the most divisive man in the sport.
