Hitting Sin City this past Saturday, December 30, UFC 219 presented some interesting outcomes in the UFC lightweight division. While Khabib Nurmagomedov’s dominant win against Edson Barboza was good for the 155-pound division, it also provided a few reminders.
Lightweight needs a defending champion, and while Conor McGregor is involved in contract disputes, this is uncertain. ‘The Eagle’s’ victory was refreshing but also added to the difficulty being experienced at the top end of the 155-pound class.
Current interim champion Tony Ferguson recently underwent surgery, meaning he will likely be out at least a month or two. Essentially, the division has an unquestionable top contender, an interim champion, and a full champion whose return is questionable at best.
McGregor Moves Up?!?
After UFC 219, there was bound to be a shuffle in the rankings. Women’s featherweight queen Cris Cyborg defended her crown, and Nurmagomedov extended his unbeaten streak to nine (in the UFC).
Most expected to see Khabib debut on the official pound-for-pound rankings, and for Cyborg to move up from her previous tenth spot. What was highly unexpected was for ‘The Notorious,’ inactive for over a year, to move up in the rankings.
