Now this would be HUGE…

Since winning the lightweight title in New York on November 12, it’s been a rollercoaster ride for Conor McGregor. Regarding his next fight, talks swiftly turned to retired boxing champion Floyd Mayweather.

Back-and-forth trash talk has again led to nothing between the two sports icons. After dominating Eddie Alvarez, there are only two real options for ‘The Notorious’ to consider at lightweight.

McGregor Khabib

Khabib & Tony

Currently the kings of the 155-pound division, outside of McGregor, are Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. ‘El Cucuy’ is unbeaten in nine fights, Khabib hasn’t lost his entire career.

Sporting a 24-0 professional record, ‘The Eagle’ destroyed Michael Johnson at UFC 205. When McGregor announced he’d be taking a break after UFC 205, we all assumed Khabib vs. Ferguson would take place next.

NOT SO FAST!

It’s Khabib Time

Speaking with MMAJunkie.com, Dana White confirmed that talks with Russia have been going very well. It’s one of the last unconquered territories on the planet for the UFC. Now it looks as though they’ve finally broken through. Guess who will be taking centre stage…

“We’re focused very heavily on Russia right now,” White said. “First of all, there’s tons of talent coming out of Russia, and a lot of fans. There’s a fighter named Khabib who’s from Russia, and he’s insanely popular. The next fight could be Conor vs. Khabib.”

Thoughts

Fighting in new territory is always a danger, but in Russia its a different story for McGregor. Out there its Khabib who is the superstar, not to mention the fact he is a straight up wrestling beast.

That said, if Conor were to win, there’d be no doubting his place in MMA history or the pound-for-pound rankings. We’ll keep you updated as news on this story comes in. Thanks for stopping by and have a merry Christmas!
