Devin Haney successfully defends his belt against Jorge Linares

WBC Lightweight Champion, Devin Haney may have won the fight but it was not an easy win as oddsmakers expected. Linares may be the older fighter but he still has the tools to become a world champion once more.

In the fight, Haney dominated the early parts of the fight. It looked like Haney was cruising to a one sided decision win. Haney chose to fight on the outside, aiming to win the rounds decisively.

The later parts of the round, Linares clipped Haney that made the fight a lot more interesting. Haney looked like he was in trouble if he gets hit a few more times but Haney showed that his defense is high level and survived up to a decision.

Linares was the first guy to score a knockdown against Lomachenko, a amazing feat to have. Haney is one of the rising prospects and has shown tremendous talent but the only thing he lacks is the star potential.

Haney is one of the most well rounded fighters in terms of skill-wise, but he does not possess the knockout power that attracts even the casual fans of boxing. Fighters like Gervonta Davis, Teofimo Lopez and Ryan Garcia have that power that could end the fight, sadly Haney relies more on his high level skill.

Haney is also willing to learn from different trainers to improve his game which is a great attitude to have if he wants to be a champion for a long time. Haney trained under Mayweather a few times and has shown to adapt Mayweather’s style as well.

What is next for Haney? Obviously the fans the clash of the undefeated prospects which consists of Garcia, Lopez, Davis and Haney himself but the problem is their negotiation issues which is really common in the boxing world. The fight to make was Lopez vs Haney for the undisputed lightweight belt but sadly did not happen.
