Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire just proved that he still belongs with the best boxers in the division by beating a younger undefeated boxer, Nordine Oubaali. Donaire is already 38 years old, so becoming a champion once more is an amazing feat itself.
Donaire did not win just by sheer luck or puncher’s chance, he showed that his counter striking abilities could still hang with the best boxers in the division. In the third round, he knocked down Oubaali twice and the second one came in the last seconds of the round. It was a devastating strike that landed but Oubaali also showed tremendous heart.
Donaire went on to close the show by knocking him down for the third time in the fourth round. The referee had no choice but to stop the fight which granted Donaire as the new WBC bantamweight champion.
Donaire’s experience and fight IQ led him to the victory, he may not be the fastest or strongest boxer in his division, but reading his opponent and timing a counter is what he does best. His left hook is his signature move for a reason.
What is next for Donaire? He could try to avenge his loss to Naoya Inoue since Donaire gave Inoue a lot of problems in their fight. Inoue even went on to say that he saw three Donaires inside the ring after getting hit by Donaire. Inoue was known as one of the most dominant champion and for him to say Donaire gave him problems showed how great of a boxer Donaire is.
Another big fight would be Casimero, both Filipino champions fight for a unification of title but obviously Casimero and Donaire would want Inoue as it gives both of them a bigger name on their respective resume. Naoya Inoue is currently recognized as one of the top pound for pound boxers in the sport of Boxing.
