Mark Schultz

Mark Schultz deserves mention here despite his limited amount of MMA bouts.

Schultz won gold medals in freestyle wrestling at the 1982 World Cup, the 1987 Pan Am Games, the 1985 and 1987 World Championships, and in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Mark’s brother Dave also won gold at the 1984 Olympics.

In 1996 Dave Schultz was shot and killed by the sponsor of the wrestling centre he operated. The story was turned into the movie “Foxcatcher” and is currently available on Netflix in most regions.

Four months after his brother’s murder Mark Schultz was a last minute replacement for a fighter and took on Gary Goodridge at UFC 9. Schultz won via doctor’s stoppage due to a cut on Goodridge’s head. Schultz would later state he suffered back injuries in the bout. He would only fight one other fight, 7 years later in a loss to Leopoldo Montenegro via a triangle choke.
