These 2 actually have already fought each other in the UFC, almost 12 years ago! Diaz won that fight via 2nd round KO. Considering neither are that old (Diaz-32 Lawler- 34) it’s pretty remarkable that so many years later the two could possibly meet for the Welterweight Championship.
If Lawler gets by Woodley one could assume that Stephen Thompson would be the next in line for a title shot considering his recent win over Rory MacDonald, but that might not necessarily be the case. If Nick Diaz keeps ready for a fight and Woodley drops out due to injury, or Thompson has to pull out from a future title shot then Diaz is right there to earn a championship opportunity Michael Bisping-style.
