It Couldn’t Could it? Floyd Mayweather is Applying For His Professional MMA License…

Everyone keeps saying it isn’t going to happen. Floyd Mayweather is 41, he’s the richest athlete in the world with a $1 billion fortune, and he’s got too much to learn if he is going to survive a single round in the octagon.

Those are all very valid points. However, also very valid is the fact that Mayweather is really doing his best to keep connected to the world of MMA. He’s been routinely linked to a UFC appearance since last November. The 50-0 unbeaten boxing legend has constantly uploaded videos of him training with 4oz gloves, entering cages and trolling his rival, Conor McGregor.

Most pundits including the likes of UFC commentator Joe Rogan agree that if Mayweather faced McGregor in the octagon it would be embarrassing for the Las Vegas resident. However, Mayweather seems set on entering the world of the UFC for real. He’s just gone out and got a license to fight in MMA professionally.

No Way

Widely regarded as the world’s best defensive boxer, the veteran is apparently training with the current UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. Last week he told reporters that while he has a way to go, his grappling is right now “7 out of 10”. That’s a bold statement from a man who has never shied from the public eye.

Mayweather won convincingly against McGregor back in August 2017. However, when all the other dimensions of MMA are added including knees, leg kicks, elbows, takedowns, and grappling, you can see why a lot of people are doubting him.

He’s Serious

‘Money’ isn’t joking around though. He says he’s already submitted an application for an MMA license. He told reporters:

“‘Everything takes time. Eventually, we’re gonna apply for the license, and hopefully, we can fight. Even if it takes 6 to 8 months — whatever it takes. We want to make sure that everything is done correctly, and everything is done the right way.”

Well, there you go. Mayweather seems to really want this. Most people with a billion dollars in their bank accounts would be happy just to live out the rest of their days. But Floyd Mayweather isn’t most people.

Who to Fight?

Of course, the next question is, if he does actually fight in the UFC who would be his opponent. McGregor would be the most lucrative without a doubt, but the Irishman would almost definitely destroy Mayweather.

CM Punk is the other name being persistently linked. The former WWE wrestler has only fought once for the UFC and had his dreams crushed by rising prospect Mickey Gall. However, he has the right sort of experience and mainstream marketability to generate interest for an MMA crossover match against Mayweather. It might actually be a contest.

Meanwhile, McGregor is expected to make his comeback in August or September this year. That’s according to UFC President Dana White. He is likely to get the chance to reclaim his lightweight title from the winner of Khabib Nurmagamedov vs Tony Ferguson. That pair will fight it out in April for the undisputed title. As soon as we have a winner, McGregor will be officially stripped.
