Georges St-Pierre has been getting asked a lot about fighting Conor McGregor lately. His response is interesting, to say the least…

Just five years ago it was Georges St-Pierre who was the poster boy of the UFC. Reigning of the welterweight division with an iron fist, St-Pierre’s shadow still looms long after he vacated the title.

Although he’s back in action at UFC 217 after a four-year hiatus, GSP isn’t hunting glory at 170. Instead, the Canadian star will face England’s Michael Bisping for the middleweight championship.

‘The Count’s’ reign has been controversial, as top-ranked 185-pounders and fans complain about Bisping’s choice of opponents. Nonetheless, GSP was granted the title fight at UFC 217, and here’s where the story links to Conor McGregor.

Also receiving heavy criticism for allegedly ‘running from contenders,’ McGregor just got done fighting Floyd Mayweather in boxing. Although money fights are wearing thin among fans, the talk of GSP vs. McGregor is beginning to build.

Georges St-Pierre and Conor McGregor are being linked to a fight sometime after UFC 217…

St-Pierre Responds

After his boxing coach Freddie Roach said GSP would ‘kick McGregor’s ass,’ St-Pierre gave an interview to ESPN.com. During the chat, ‘Rush’ was asked whether he would like to fight McGregor:

“Everything is possible,” St-Pierre said with a smile. “Everyone is targeting Conor McGregor because he’s the money fight you know. But, I don’t challenge people that are in lower weight class divisions. For me, I don’t do that. I’m going up to fight Michael Bisping now so I’m looking up.

“HE’S AN AMAZING FIGHTER AND IT WOULD BE AN AMAZING HONOUR.”

“But I don’t know. I don’t know what to say. If the fans want it or if he wants it then maybe it will happen you know, but right now I’m focused on Bisping.”

‘Rush’ also responds to Nate Diaz’s comments made after UFC 196. Following his epic submission win over McGregor, Diaz claimed the UFC was trying to get McGregor to call out St-Pierre.

GSP, who was in attendance, gives his side of the story:

It was a tough night for Georges St-Pierre in his last fight. At UFC 167, many people including Dana White believe Johny Hendricks won the fight. GSP eventually won a split decision which caused a lot of controversy…

“It’s funny everyone asks me about this. Lorenzo Fertitta at the time asked me to come, to show up because I was in a meeting with my agent in negotiation with the UFC. They wanted me to be there, I don’t know if he had something else in his head, but me, I was just there because of the meeting. I didn’t have a plan of doing anything. Regardless, we don’t compete in the same weight class.”

Again the reports and rumors swirl, just remember all the big fights start off this way. GSP vs. McGregor would depend on lots of factors, including tonight’s UFC 216 and of course UFC 217. Let’s hold on to our seats as the rest of 2017 should be a wild ride!
