Georges St. Pierre is one of the best fighters to ever step into an MMA cage. Now 38-years-old, ‘Rush’ is officially retired. However, some believe that it may not be the last time we see him fight. Retirements don’t tend to mean much in MMA. A two-division champion, ‘GSP’ is a true legend of the sport.
After going on a four-year hiatus, St. Pierre came back to win the middleweight title. Of course, he was already the greatest welterweight in MMA history. However, ulcerative colitis caused him to vacate the belt. When he recovered from that he had an eye on the lightweight title.
St. Pierre is a very rich man. The only reason he’d come back is if it would improve his legacy. A fight with Khabib Nurmagamedov is exactly what he wants. The UFC is refusing to sanction that. Now, Firas Zahabi has spoken on Joe Rogan’s podcast. and explained what it would take for his student to return to action.
Monster
Zahabi is one of the most respect MMA coaches on the planet. He’s the head instructor at Tristar Gym in Montreal, Canada. As well as St. Pierre, fighters like Rory MacDonald, John Makdessi and Yves Jabouin have all passed through its hallowed gates.
“All the time,” Zahabi told Rogan when asked if St-Pierre still trains. “He’s a machine. Dude, I’m telling you, if Usman or Colby gets injured . . . I don’t want to talk for Georges but man, he can kill anybody. He can kill anybody this man. He’s the world’s greatest martial artist. He’s a monster. I was just training with him Saturday.
Megafight
According to Zahabi, St. Pierre would definitely be willing to come back for a super fight. That means either Conor McGregor or Khabib Nurmagamedov. The latter is more likely. He explained that this is what it would take to motivate GSP.
“It has to be, in my opinion – I don’t want to talk for him, but I think the thing that’s going to motivate him is a megafight,” Zahabi said of Georges St-Pierre. “He doesn’t want to be champion again and fight every three-four months. That’s done. It’s not gonna happen no more. But one megafight. Invite him back for a megafight and see if you could entice him because he’s a competitor.
He’s still training, he’s still ripped, shredded, fighting. He can do five rounds. Maybe he can’t do five rounds right away but he only needs a few weeks and then he’s doing five rounds. He’s close to being there. He can get in fight shape. He’s just a monster.”
165
When asked who he thinks St. Pierre should fight, Zahabi was quick to respond. He said: “165. Khabib.” He made a good point about the UFC’s BMF belt. That was effectively a sideshow, exhibition fight that was fed by the public’s demand for violence. It’s opened new doors. Even if GSP doesn’t fight for a title, it’s still big enough that he could take on an unbeaten champion at a catchweight.
Furthermore, if you wanted to create a strap, you could call it the legacy title or something dramatic like that. These two men are the best from their mutual eras – or up there anyway. Khabib wants this fight, so let’s make it happen in the near future.
