Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson is scheduled to fight Gilbert Burns as the co-main event for UFC 264. Thompson is no stranger in a title fight as he has fought twice against Tyron Woodley but ended up short. A win over Burns could grant him a title shot, he is currently the highest ranked fighter that Usman has yet to face.

The UFC welterweight division might be one of the most stacked division right now given the big names and their talent. For how stacked it is, the current champion, Kamaru Usman has beaten top 1 to 3 contenders which is INSANE and just shows how good and dominant Usman is right now.

Of course, Thompson needs to concentrate on Burns right now as he is a dangerous opponent. He has decent striking that could knock out his opponents and he is also a BJJ specialist. Thompson must keep the fight standing up in order for him to win safely.

Gilbert Burns may have lost his last fight against Kamaru Usman but during the early exchanges Burns managed to clip Usman where he even scored a knockdown. One of his mistakes were he let Usman recover from the strikes. He stalled a bit when he had his back on the canvas.

What makes it interesting is Thompson gives a new fresh matchup against Usman if he indeed gets a title shot. No other fighter could move or has a somewhat similar style to Thompson’s karate. If Thompson could keep the fight standing up, he has a chance of winning against anyone. That speaks highly of how good Thompson is with his striking.

There are reports that Covington will fight for the title next but there are no announcements yet or official date. Will Thompson change the UFC’s mind of who is the next title contender if he somehow beats Burns in an impressive fashion?
