The wheels continue to spin as Justin Gaethje is linked to a fight with Conor McGregor…

If you get to fight Conor McGregor it’s like finding the treasure at the end of the rainbow. The Irishman is the most lucrative possible opponent in the UFC today. Everybody knows about ‘red panty nights’ so it’s no surprise that everybody within three weight classes wants to fight him.

McGregor hasn’t fought since last year when he lost to Khabib Nurmagamedov. In short, that was a brutal night for the Irishman. After a rough beating from the Russian champion, McGregor submitted in round four. His team will be super selective about his next opponent.

Justin Gaethje is top of the list. The American brings incredible violence to all of his matches and he’s also very hittable. He’s pushing to fight ‘The Notorious’ in Dublin, but there’s one big problem. It seems like McGregor isn’t replying to his DMs. Hard luck Justin.

DM Sent

Gaethje is coming off the back of a clinical win over Donald Cerrone. It was the most mature performance of his UFC career, as he picked his shots very carefully. First of all, he rained down leg kicks on ‘Cowboy.’ Above all, it was his pressure that did the damage as he landed heavy shots.

He dropped Cerrone and was subsequently furious because the referee didn’t intervene. A former WSOF lightweight champion, Gaethje has become a cult hero amongst fans for his chaotic style. However, he appears to have turned a corner. Now that’s two wins out of two.

Everybody else is booked or coming off of a loss. Gaethje is definitely the perfect opponent for McGregor right now.

Negotiations

ESPN’s Ariel Helwani confirmed that the UFC was trying to make this fight happen. McGregor needs to climb back up the ladder if he wants another title shot. Now that the UFC has its big deal with the ESPN, McGregor’s individual importance has decreased. Helwani reported:

“UFC tried to book McGregor vs. Gaethje earlier this summer. Both sides were into it, until McGregor broke his left hand. That’s the fight to make. Early 2020.”

McGregor is definitely back in training now. He recently posted an image of him training with Cian Cowley. Then he tweeted: “Dublin, December 14th.” There is already a UFC event booked in Las Vegas for that date. But who cares about Amanda Nunes v Germaine De Randamie?

Showdown

Gaethje is obsessed with the idea of fighting McGregor. It would guarantee a lot of money. Even more importantly, it’s the biggest possible fight in the division other than the title fight. Beating McGregor brings a lot of prestige. The Highlight’ has already messaged the Irishman on Twitter. He tweeted:

“I’ve been waiting for a reply.”

He could be waiting for a while. McGregor is highly likely to fight again though. Despite his whiskey company having early success, sales have definitely gone down. ‘The Notorious’ will want to drive up his momentum, and a fight will do that for sure.
