Once again boxing and MMA are intertwined. This time it’s all-time legend Manny Pacquiao issuing a challenge to the UFC’s biggest star Conor McGregor…
2017 has been a strange year in combat sports. MMA, marked by the absence of Conor McGregor, has faced a difficult year filled with various controversies and drops in pay-per-view numbers.
Meanwhile, McGregor himself has been earning money hand over fist. Currently the UFC lightweight champion, ‘The Notorious’ crossed over to boxing for his only professional contest of 2017.
What started as a serious of trash talking Tweets quickly evolved into the year’s biggest and most bizarre fight. Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor, as much attention as it demanded, was fight purely driven by money.
As predicted by many, Mayweather outclassed McGregor in the Irishman’s boxing debut. Years of competing at the elite level overshadowed McGregor’s youth and vigor. Now, after a long and drawn out year, it looks as though McGregor is going to be out until at least April.
McGregor Receives Another Boxing Challenge
With potential fights against Nate Diaz and interim champion Tony Ferguson coming next, McGregor is currently involved in contract negotiations with the UFC. We’ll talk more about that later in the article.
Multiple-weight boxing champion and Philipino legend Manny Pacquiao sent out a challenge to McGregor today. Via his Instagram account, ‘Pac Man’ told McGregor to ‘stay healthy’ and ready himself for a ‘real boxing match’ in 2018:
Here’s the skinny from coach John Kavanagh on McGregor’s hands being ‘better than ever.’
“To be honest, some of the things we’ve come away with from the Mayweather fight, some of the (improvements),” Kavanagh told The Daily Star’s Starsport. “When would an MMA guy have a chance to take six months just to focus on one aspect of MMA? Never is the answer, they’re always trying to work on everything.”
“But when he does return to the Octagon, his hands are going to be a lot better than what they were. And I’m excited to see that.”
“Tony is the interim champion, Conor is the champion, it’s the fight that makes sense,” Kavanagh said. “It’s the fight that has to happen.”
McGregor vs. FERGUSON Dammit!
“I kind of hoped that maybe Diaz would stay active and do one or two fights in the meantime. He hasn’t, whereas Tony Ferguson has.
“He’s been very busy and has been very vocal and he keeps on winning – and you have to respect that. He keeps on coming through these fights and winning.”
“So it has changed from me being most excited about the Diaz trilogy to now I wanna see him and Tony.”
