UFC fighter and three-time Olympian Mark Madsen has decided to retire after years of fighting in the MMA cage.
This Wednesday, the fighter announced his retirement and shared his comment about the move. In his post, “The Olympian” expressed contentment with his decision and all the achievements he has made in the industry. Ultimately, the 39-year-old stressed his outlook on the importance of caring for his body.
“The time is right,” Madsen shared in the post. “I’m full and looking back on a career in elite sports that I’m very proud of. Sports have shaped me as a person, and I’m grateful for everything it has given me and my family.
“MMA is a demanding sport, and the body has to last for many years to come. This has also been a factor in my decision to [retire], but I’m super proud and grateful for all that we’ve accomplished.”
Prior to his entrance into the UFC roster, Madsen had made a mark in the wrestling world by earning a total of five world championship wrestling medals between 2005 and 2015. He further cemented his name by securing a silver at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. In general, the fighter collected an 8-0 record before working with UFC, where he succeeded in all of his four first matches. However, the fighter experienced losses in his last two bouts in the promotion, with Jared Gordon giving him a first-round TKO and Grant Dawson submitting him in the third round of their fight.
