Positive news for fans of ex-UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes…
It wasn’t that long ago that former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes was still competing in the octagon. Although losing his last two fights in 2010/11, Hughes left the sport with a 45-9 record.
Earlier this year he was even talking about making a comeback, but then a near-fatal accident put a halt on his aspirations. On June 16 at a crossing in Illinois, Hughes’ truck was struck by a moving train, and he suffered serious head trauma.
Placed in a medically induced coma, it was touch-and-go at first. Fans waited, sending their prayers to the ex-champ.

Hughes Recovery is a ‘Miracle’ According to Zucca
Pictured this week with his best friend Tony Zucca, the first photo of Hughes since the crash provided a positive update. Here’s what Zucca said on social media:
“I can’t even describe the emotions I am feeling as I write this post. Less than two months ago I didn’t know if my best friend was going to make it, and tonight we made a jail break for sushi (in disguise. Ha). Talk about a rollercoaster of emotions! His progress is nothing short of a miracle. He is working so hard and fights through the frustration. He is, as he’s always been, an inspiration.”
“I can’t wait to hit the mats with him again…and he told me today that he has “one more round” left in him! Ha. (He laughed…but definitely wasn’t joking!). Thank you for all of your prayers! Please keep them up as he still has a long road ahead of him. I am witnessing the power of them firsthand! So thankful!”

Living Legend
During his time in the UFC, Hughes defeated and competed against some of the greatest fighters of that period. Himself considered one of the best champions ever, let alone at welterweight, Hughes defended the title seven times.
Between 2004-2006, Hughes defeated two of the best fighters on the planet. Beating Georges St-Pierre by armbar at UFC 50, he extended his record to 37-4. Against BJ Penn at UFC 63, Hughes got a TKO win to move to 41-4.

Get Well Soon Matt
When he eventually retired in 2011, Hughes still had an incredible record of 45-9. Earlier this year he stated a UFC comeback was not completely off the cards. Other classic fights for Hughes in the UFC are ranked among some of the greatest ever.
UFC president Dana White declared Hughes’ match with Frank Trigg as his all time favorite scrap. He also defeated Sean Sherk, Carlos Newton, Royce and Renzo Gracie, Matt Serra, Chris Lytle, Joe Riggs and many more.
Once again we here at SD wish Matt Hughes all the best with his recovery. It’s no surprise that he’s tackling his injuries with the same strength and vigor he showed during his legendary fighting career.
