In October 2014 a story broke on Sherdog.com that Floyd intended on putting on MMA events and fights.
“If you want to be treated fair, come over to Mayweather Promotions. We believe in the talent winning. That’s what we believe in,” Mayweather told Fighthype.com. “We believe in treating our boxers and our MMA fighters fair. I want a lot of MMA fighters to get in touch with Mayweather Promotions.”
While these plans seemed to take a back seat to the end of his own boxing career, Mayweather has had this thought in his head for some time and again the news was broken by Sherdog.com in April of this year about ‘Money’s’ intentions to promote MMA. This news slipped under the radar and was then completely overshadowed this month by the rumours of the McGregor fight.
The two stories may well be linked however. If Mayweather does plan on promoting MMA fights he will undoubtedly want the best fighters on the planet to fight under the Mayweather fight name. McGregor is unquestionably the biggest star in MMA right now and possibly ever. The Mayweather vs McGregor fight could well be Floyd’s way of releasing him from his UFC contract.

If the fight were to go ahead, it would have to be either a joined promotion or McGregor would have to be bought out of his current contract. There is one man who has the power and ‘Money’ to buy McGregor out of his current UFC deal and he appears to be looking at doing just this.
