GSP had announced that he was taking an extended hiatus from the sport after his 9th consecutive welterweight title defense, and it would turn out to be four long years before he finall returned.
There was no tune-up fight for GSP despite coming off a long layoff and stepping up to middleweight, as he was taking an immeditate title fight against Michael Bisping.
Bisping had been in a great form at the time, but GSP fought like he’d never been away from the sport as he floored the champion and went on to submit him with a second round rear-naked choke to win the title.
There may be another chapter still to be written in this story as rumors of a fight between St-Pierre and lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov remain, but St-Pierre relinquished the belt soon after his victory and has since claimed he has retired.
