7. B.J Penn
This list starts off in very controversial fashion, with the man some say is the greatest lightweight of all time.
B.J Penn earned the nickname “the Prodigy” when he earned black belt in jiu jitsu in just 3 years. The buzz around him continued as he entered mixed martial arts, and it’s almost as if nobody noticed that he never did become the dominant division clearing champion that many assumed he would.
His record in UFC title fights is 5-4-1, that’s hardly what you would expect from a guy who is generally referred to as a legend. He defended the lightweight title 3 times, that’s it. Frankie Edgar and Benson Henderson both defended the same title on 3 occasions and nobody is giving their careers the same respect as what’s given to B.J Penn’s.
