One of the Freakiest MMA Injuries of the Weekend Happened at ONE: Heart of the Lion This Weekend… Scotland’s George Mann Got Lit Up and Suffered a Massive Hematoma…

Hematomas are one of the freakiest injuries that you’ll ever see. Basically, they’re a localized collection of blood outside the blood vessels, usually because of heavy trauma. It’s a common enough injury in combat sports, but some hematomas are definitely worse than others. Your head is not meant to sprout another baby head.

ONE: Heart of the Lion went down this weekend in Singapore. While Kevin Belingon stole the headlines by ending Bibiano Fernandes’s 8-year win streak, another moment from the card has been doing the rounds on social media, and if you look below you’ll see why.

Scottish fighter George Mann got absolutely lit up in a kickboxing match, by Jo Nattawut. It’s one of the nastiest hematomas we’ve seen in a long time and it’s amazing that he made it through to the final bell.

Swollen

Your head is just not meant to look like that. Mann was fighting the vastly experienced Nattawut in an ONE Super Series Muay Thai Fight. He got continuously lit up the whole way through the fight, but somehow made it through to the final bell with his head ballooning. The key moment came in the third round when ‘Smokin’ Joe’ smashed him with a brutal elbow.

Born in Scotland, but based in Perth, Australia, it’s no wonder that Mann ended up on ONE’s radar, after a very successful Muay Thai career to date. Sure, he got badly lit up this weekend, but ironically it’s got him more attention than if he had of won the match.

Sustained

This was a sustained and brutal beatdown that just didn’t go Mann’s way at all. He suffered one of the worst hematomas we have seen since that ludicrous fight between Jose Aldo and Mark Hominick back at UFC 129 in 2011. Joe Rogan described the massive swelling on Hominick’s head as being like a ‘second head’. It’s probably still the worst one that we’ve ever seen.

Despite looking freaky, hematomas are usually not that serious. They’re pretty much just swelling because of trauma and impact. However, in combat sports, they can result in brain trauma and long-term damage so they need to be examined very carefully.
