While knockouts by way of punches, kicks, elbows and knees are far more common, some of the most spectacular and devastating finishes in MMA history have come by way of slams.
In this article we’ll recall 10 of the most brutal and memorable slams of all-time, including both career-defining triumphs and career-ending defeats.
Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson vs. Ricardo Arona
You can’t talk about huge slams in MMA without bringing up this picture-perfect knockout courtesy of Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson against Ricardo Arona.
The bout took place baavk in the heyday of PRIDE in 2004, with ‘Rampage’ having won eight of his last nine fights, while Arona held an 8-1 record, making this a mouth-watering match-up at the time.
A significant portion of the first round was fought on the mat, with Jackson on top, but he didn’t have it all his own way as Arona landed some big heel kicks from his back that seemed to rock ‘Rampage.’
However, he recovered and it wasn’t long before he got payback in incredible fashion.
Arona attempted to set up a triangle choke, but ‘Rampage’ countered that by hoisting Arona high into the air and then in one smooth motion powering him headfirst back onto the mat, creating a thunderous impact that instantly KO’d the Brazilian.
It was an all-time classic finish that has since become the stuff of legend and helped Jackson earn another nickname – ‘Slampage.’
