The Black Beast Sent Drago to the Shadow Realm and Finished With One of the Best Post-Fight Interviews of All Time…

Derrick Lewis already had cult hero status coming into this fight. The 33-year-old Houston, Texas-based fighter is renowned for his outstanding knockout power. A brawler who was involved in street fights at a young age, Lewis is even more famous for his incredible interviews.

Fighting on the main card of UFC 229 in Las Vegas last night, Lewis was taking on high-flying 29 year old Russian, Alexander ‘Drago’ Volkov. Regarded as the dark horse of the division, Volkov was coming off the back of a win against Fabricio Werdum.

After overcoming adversity, Lewis was able to take smash Volkov with a brutal KO finish which you can watch below. However, it’s his post-fight interview that has everybody talking. Comeback

Was it the best heavyweight fight of all time? No way. Up until the final 15 seconds of the bout, Volkov was totally on top. Lewis threatened briefly with heavy hands, but Volkov was slicker and able to use his height and reach. However, he was clearly afraid to pursue the finish and that cost him, because Lewis came on strong finally, smashing the Moscow fighter into oblivious. Then he took his shorts off and lay down because:

“My balls was hot.”

Classic.

Lewis explained what exactly was motivating him to keep fighting and get the knockout, even though his gas tank was almost empty. He told Joe Rogan after the fight:

“A couple of hours before the fight, Trump called me and told me to knock this [expletive] out and make him look bad. I wanted to knock this Russian motherfucker out because they’re making him look bad on the news,” Lewis said. “… You know Vladimir Putin and shit … USA in this hoe.”

Derrick Lewis is a treasure and this was one of the best interviews ever. Period.

Title Shot

‘The Black Beast’ might have found himself somewhat unwillingly on the cusp of a title shot. He’s won three straight fights, against Volkov, Francis Ngannou, and Marcin Tybura. However, he admits that he’s a long way physically from where he will need to be if he wants to beat reigning champion, Daniel Cormier. He told Rogan:

“I need to sit my black ass down and do some more cardio fuck what you talking about right now i ain’t trying to fight for a title right now.”

Elsewhere on the night, Tony Ferguson won a bloody battle against Anthony Pettis after ‘Showtime’ broke his hand. But the biggest story of the night was Khabib Nurmagamedov submitting Conor McGregor and then going to war with Dillon Danis in the crowd. It was an insane way to end a crazy night of fights. Dana White has said that Khabib’s purse is being held back pending an investigation.
