Seemingly on a collision course, Conor McGregor and Tony Ferguson hold belts in the same weight class. According to one side, the unification isn’t that simple…
A highly anticipated bout between the two best lightweights on the planet is on the cards. Unfortunately, it’s far from a sure bet yet. Ever since Conor McGregor moved to lightweight at UFC 205, the division has been in a shambolic state.
Taking the opportunity for some time off after starching Eddie Alvarez last November, McGregor put a slight hold on the division. Then, when he started on the path to the Floyd Mayweather boxing match, he essentially froze the top end at 155 pounds.
QWhen Khabib Nurmagomedov was unable to fight Tony Ferguson, the division took another painful blow. Finally, at UFC 216, the lightweight category got a boost. Ferguson submitted fellow beast, Kevin Lee, capturing the junior belt.
Although a unification clash with McGregor would seem a no-brainer, things are never that simple in the UFC.
Coach Eddie Says McGregor Wants None of Ferguson
With a possible money fight with Nate Diaz always hovering, speculation continues into who wins the Conor McGregor sweepstakes. UFC president Dana White claimed McGregor vs. Ferguson is ‘the fight to make.’
As we all know, especially where ‘The Notorious’ is concerned, nothing is certain until the contract is signed. According to Eddie Bravo, the world famous 10th Planet coach and BJJ star, the idea of fighting Ferguson scares McGregor, and he doesn’t want any of ‘El Cucuy.’

“It has to be Conor; it has to be. I mean, it’s either Conor or vacate. You need to defend or vacate, that’s what it’s all about “, Bravo said, speaking on this week’s Talking Brawls podcast. As transcribed by Severe MMA.
“He’s got the belt; it’s the interim belt but he’s got the belt. It doesn’t look Conor wants any part of Tony. It doesn’t sound like he’s interested in him at all….he’s never been interested in Tony because he knows Tony’s mind. He knows that Tony can’t be broken mentally.”
“It’s the biggest fight right now, Tony v Conor. He’s one of the top guys in the world. He’s already proven himself.”

When asked if Bravo or Ferguson had heard from the UFC about a potential fight with McGregor. Bravo replied : “No, no. Not at all. Nothing.”
“He’s already training, back working on his stand up. He knows it ain’t over yet. Whoever it is that’s going to step up next. Whether is Khabib or Conor, it’s going to be one hell of a fight.”
McGregor’s choices are pretty much his to make, as the UFC now holds little to no control over the Irish megastar. Will he pick ‘El Cucuy’ and legitimise the division?
