Conor McGregor is Targeting a July Return… The Irishman Confirmed This to Media in a St. Patrick’s Day Interview… Who Will he be Fighting?

‘The Notorious’ looked like he was having a great time over the last couple of days. He spent time in both Chicago and Boston for their St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. As cities traditionally associated with the Irish diaspora, McGregor was proud to represent his nation in front of the world.

It’s a far cry from the ridiculous situation he found himself in last week when he was arrested for allegedly stealing and smashing a fan’s phone. He’s now facing his third lawsuit since 2016. However, as one of the wealthiest athletes on the planet, this is more of a minor inconvenience than anything else.

In fact, he’s already looking ahead to the future. While he’s eligible to return at the end of next month, he’s looking at coming back in July – with a whole host of potential opponents looking for that ‘red panty night.’

Looking Ahead

McGregor spoke to ABC-7 in Chicago about his next intentions. After losing to Khabib Nurmagamedov, he will be looking to bounce back in style and remind the world of his skills.

“We’re currently in negotiations,” McGregor told ABC-7’s Larry Mowry on the parade site. “We’re aiming for July – we’ll see what happens. I am staying ready. This morning I was doing incline sprints on the treadmill on my program, the McGregor F.A.S.T. program, staying in a hotel room. So we’re staying on it, getting work in as we go. It’s great to be here, a young Irish man, and treated with such respected. It’s breathtaking for me and I’m very happy to be here. ”

Rivalry

Although McGregor has been heavily linked to a potential clash with fan-favourite Donald Cerrone, Max Holloway has thrown his name into the hat. McGregor took a unanimous decision against the Hawaiian featherweight champion back in Boston in 2013. Holloway decided to trash talk the Irishman on Twitter, but McGregor wasn’t having any of it. He tweeted:

“I took my acl and shoved it up your arse that night kid. You don’t still have it by any chance? I’m lookin for it years. Happy paddy’s day.”

Of course, this was what Holloway was looking for. Many fans believe that the current version of Max would have enough in his tank to take out a softer, less hungry McGregor.

Response

‘Blessed’ is one of the most exciting fighters on the planet right now, and one of the most dominant active champions on the roster. His move up to lightweight is exciting, and he’s getting an immediate shot at UFC gold, with an interim title clash against Dustin Poirier – another former McGregor victim – set to go down at UFC 236 next month. Holloway tweeted:

“There you go ?? ?? that’s the OG champ champ the world wants. I do have it. White belt bum 21 year old Max gave it to me to return to you in Dublin. Glad you found your confidence again in Boston. You can find your ACL again in Vegas in July.”

There you go: the narrative practically writes itself. McGregor v Holloway for the interim title in July, with the winner set to take on Khabib at the end of the year. Of course, Dustin Poirier might have something to say about that…
