Now Wouldn’t This Be Interesting? Donald Cerrone and Conor McGregor Are Being Linked to Fight in the UFC… Irish Media Outlets Are Reporting That ‘The Notorious’ Will Fight ‘Cowboy’ Next…

They’re two of the most iconic fighters of their generation. Conor McGregor became the first man to hold titles in two divisions consecutively when he won the featherweight and lightweight championships (even if the UFC kind of forced that narrative). Meanwhile, Donald Cerrone has the most wins and finishes in the history of the promotion.

Both men are destined to become future Hall-of-Famers. While Cerrone is probably never going to win a UFC title, he’s probably going to be remembered with more fondness than McGregor by the hardcore MMA fanbase. Meanwhile, McGregor burst onto the scene like a rocket, becoming the UFC’s first ever bonafide mainstream star.

Now if reports in Ireland are to be believed – led by the mainstream tabloid the Irish Mirror – the two men could be set to fight in a totally unexpected match-up that would actually make a lot of sense for both men.

McGregor is at a major transitional point in his career. While he remains the UFC’s most valuable commodity and biggest pay-per-view draw, he knows that he needs to win his next fight. That’s why even though he’s been saying that he wants to rematch against Khabib Nurmagamedov, he hasn’t been forcing the issue as he did after losing to Nate Diaz. He said after his defeat:

“I will be back with my confidence high. Fully prepared. If it is not the rematch right away, no problem. I will face the next in line. It’s all me always, anyway.”

A fight against Cerrone might be what he needs to get back his sharpness, against an iconic fighter who he has had bad blood with in the past.

Meanwhile, after breaking Mike Perry’s arm in a submission win, Donald Cerrone teased that he is planning on moving back down to lightweight to seize the championship from Khabib Nurmagamedov. He said, in his post-fight interview:

”There is someone, they already came up and told me. There’s your clickbait. They told me the who for once in my life first. 155. It’s very exciting. Guy’s very exciting. You’ll like it. You’ll all like it.”

This actually does feel like a fight that fans would genuinely get behind. It would be totally unexpected, but ‘Cowboy’ deserves a ‘red panty night’ after such a long and prestigious career. It would have the right amount of risk and reward for both men. Cerrone called McGregor ‘English’ in the past, while ‘The Notorious’ scorned ‘Cowboy’s stiffness and predictability.

Chael Sonnen believes that this fight is not beyond the realms of possibility. He speculated that this could very well happen and that the beef that the two men had in the past could be used to promote it even more. Sonnen said:

“The point is this: that fight sells, that fight works. That’s the kind of fight I think stylistically Conor is going to look at and say, ‘yeah I would take that.’ For sure Cowboy’s going to look at it and take that. I think if you’re looking at the Conor McGregor sweepstakes, that is constantly going on – and yeah he’s suspended right now and he’s gotta get through Nevada – but I do not believe there is an immediate path to Khabib Nurmagamedov.

I don’t think that there is. I really think it’s going to go Khabib/Tony. Which means what is Conor going to do? And while Diaz is certainly an option, while waiting is certainly an option, I think based on what we’ve seen, based on the records, based on the promotion, based on the interviews, based on the notoriety of ‘Cowboy’, I think that’s maybe the most likely scenario.”
